PLOS Computational Biology Author Summary vs abstract checklist
A source-backed checklist for keeping the nontechnical Author Summary distinct from the scientific abstract before submission.
PLOS Computational Biology asks Research Article authors for two adjacent summaries that do different work: a scientific abstract and a nontechnical Author Summary. Treating the second as a lightly simplified copy of the first can leave readers with two versions of the same compressed explanation.
This guide answers one narrow question: how can authors keep the Author Summary distinct from the abstract before submission? The journal requirements below come from the current PLOS Computational Biology submission guidelines. The comparison and editing steps are conservative preparation advice, not additional journal rules.
Start with two different audiences
The abstract is the compact scientific overview. PLOS Computational Biology says it should be succinct, contain no citations, avoid specialist abbreviations, and stay within 300 words. It should cover the background, methods, and principal conclusions without using section headings.
The Author Summary has a different purpose. The journal requires a 150–200 word, nontechnical summary immediately after the abstract. It should be written in the first-person voice, remain distinct from the abstract, and be accessible to both scientists and nonscientists. The guidance also tells authors to avoid acronyms and complex terminology.
Those instructions point to two different reading situations:
- The abstract helps a research reader quickly understand what was studied, how it was studied, and what the authors concluded.
- The Author Summary helps a broader reader understand why the question matters, what the authors did in plain language, and what the work adds.
The authors decide what the findings mean and what can be claimed. A preparation check should preserve those decisions while making the two summaries visibly different in audience, voice, and language.
Build the abstract around the study
Start with the abstract because it is the denser scientific account. Check that it gives the reader enough context to understand the research question, identifies the approach at an appropriate level, and states the principal conclusions without extending beyond the manuscript.
Then run the mechanical checks that follow directly from the journal guidance:
- no more than 300 words;
- no citations;
- no section headings;
- no unexplained specialist abbreviations; and
- a clear progression from background through methods to the principal conclusions.
The guidance describes that conceptual progression but does not call for labeled subsections. Adding Background, Methods, or Conclusions as visible headings would defeat the unheaded format.
A final consistency pass should also compare the abstract with the main manuscript. Check that the study population or data scope, approach, central result, and conclusion still match the latest Results and Discussion. This is practical quality control after revision, not a separate PLOS requirement.
Reframe the work for the Author Summary
Once the abstract is stable, do not simplify it sentence by sentence. Put it aside and answer four questions afresh:
- What broad problem did we address?
- Why does that problem matter beyond the immediate specialty?
- What did we do, in language an interested nonspecialist can follow?
- What did we learn, without claiming more than the study supports?
Draft those answers in the first person—using we where appropriate—because the journal specifically asks for first-person voice. Then shape them into 150–200 words.
This method helps the Author Summary become an explanation rather than a translation exercise. It also reduces the temptation to preserve every technical noun, instrument name, model label, or statistical expression from the abstract.
First person does not mean informal speculation. Keep every statement anchored in the authors' actual work. The summary can be approachable while remaining precise about what was investigated and what the results support.
Check the summaries side by side
Place the abstract and Author Summary in two columns or two adjacent panes. Compare them by role rather than line by line:
- Primary reader: the abstract serves a research reader; the Author Summary serves scientists and nonscientists.
- Length: the abstract can be up to 300 words; the Author Summary must be 150–200 words.
- Voice: the authors determine the abstract's scientific presentation; the Author Summary uses first person.
- Technical density: the abstract is a concise scientific overview; the Author Summary is a nontechnical explanation.
- Citations: the abstract has none; keep the Author Summary self-contained.
- Placement: the abstract comes first, with the Author Summary immediately after it.
The citation entry for the Author Summary is conservative preparation advice: the journal's explicit no-citation instruction is stated for the abstract, while a self-contained Author Summary helps meet the stated goal of accessibility. Authors should follow any more specific instruction in the current submission system.
Now look for duplicated structure. If both sections open with nearly identical sentences, list methods in the same order, and end with the same conclusion sentence, the Author Summary probably has not yet taken on its own role.
Distinct does not mean contradictory. Names, quantities, directions of effect, and conclusions must agree wherever both summaries mention them. The difference should come from framing and language, not from changing the research story.
Replace specialist compression
Specialist language often compresses a great deal of shared field knowledge into a short phrase. That efficiency helps the abstract but can block the broader audience of the Author Summary.
In the Author Summary, search for:
- acronyms that require expansion;
- model, assay, algorithm, or instrument names that can be described by function;
- statistical terms that can be expressed as the practical comparison being made;
- field-specific labels that are unnecessary to understand the central point; and
- long noun phrases carried over from the manuscript title.
Do not replace precise language with a stronger or more dramatic claim. For example, a relationship should not become a cause, and an observed result should not become a universal promise. Plain language should reduce decoding effort without increasing certainty.
Some technical terms may be essential. When one must remain, define it briefly in ordinary language at first use. The goal is not to remove the subject matter; it is to make the subject matter followable.
Protect the order and word limits
PLOS Computational Biology places the Author Summary immediately after the abstract in the manuscript organization. A late file merge or template change can separate the two, move the Author Summary elsewhere, or leave an old version in place.
Before upload, confirm the sequence directly in the final manuscript file:
- title-page material required by the journal;
- abstract;
- Author Summary; and
- the remaining manuscript sections in the required order.
Recount both sections after the last edit. A phrase added for clarity can push the Author Summary over 200 words, while a method clarification can push the abstract over 300. Record the two counts separately rather than relying on the total manuscript word count.
If the initial submission is being prepared as a single PDF, also inspect the rendered PDF. The journal allows a single PDF for initial submission and asks for separate files at revision, so the visible order should survive export and later file separation.
Run the final two-summary checklist
Before submitting, verify:
- the abstract is no longer than 300 words;
- the abstract has no citations or section headings;
- the abstract avoids specialist abbreviations;
- the abstract covers the background, methods, and principal conclusions;
- the Author Summary appears immediately after the abstract;
- the Author Summary is 150–200 words;
- the Author Summary uses first-person voice;
- the Author Summary is understandable to a nonspecialist;
- acronyms and unnecessary complex terminology have been removed;
- the Author Summary is not a sentence-by-sentence rewrite of the abstract;
- factual details and conclusions agree across both sections and the manuscript; and
- the rendered submission file preserves the intended order.
This checklist cannot decide whether the scientific framing is complete or whether a conclusion is justified. Those remain author responsibilities.
