Readiness requirements

Review the key details below, or download the complete checklist with every stored source-backed requirement.

Abstract length

  • Provide an author-written abstract of no more than 200 words.
  • Please enter an abstract of no more than 200 words and a set of up to 10 keywords in the relevant portals of Scholar One.

Keywords

  • Provide up to 10 keywords chosen by the author.

Reference style

  • Articlo formats your supplied references to the journal's stored style and checks that citations match the reference list; source validity is not verified.
  • A typical manuscript will be 8,000–10,000 words including tables, references, captions, footnotes and endnotes, with 10,000 being the absolute maximum.
Show 7 more
  • The number and length of individual contributions within a special issue may vary, but no single essay should total more than 10,000 words or – except for the introductory essay – less than 7,000 words, including all notes and references.
  • The Oxford English Dictionary and UK-English spell checker should be used as the reference for correct spelling and hyphenation.
  • In citing Korean authors' names in bibliographies, a comma should separate the surname from the given name, like so: Kim, Jae-hoon.
  • We follow the Thai norm of referring to Thai authors by given names, not surnames, and all citations by Thai authors should alphabetised in the bibliography and elsewhere by given names.
  • The full names of Thai authors – given name and surname – should be cited at first reference, with subsequent references using only the given name: for example: Khukrit Pramoj (first reference); Khukrit (subsequent references).
  • References: Should be kept to a minimum.
  • A declaration must be included within the submission stating: Confirmation the authors take full responsibility for the integrity of the whole content, including accuracy of references.

Figure and table rules

  • Keep every figure and table numbered, captioned, and cited in the manuscript.
  • All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the manuscript (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2).
Show 11 more
  • In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. Figure 1(a), Figure 1(b)).
  • A standard half-page image, table or figure is usually considered to be the length equivalent of 250 words for the purpose of considering the upper limit of the word length, but the minimum word length must be achieved without considering images, tables or figures.
  • Images, tables and figures should have direct relevance to the text of the article in which they appear, and as a general rule will be limited to a maximum of 5 per article.
  • Papers should not have more than five figures.
  • Note that figures (including charts, graphs and tables) must be separated from the text, saved in their own file and lodged in the appropriate portal.
  • Please provide the highest quality figure format possible.
  • Figure captions must be saved separately, as part of the file containing the complete text of the manuscript, and numbered correspondingly.
  • You must ensure appropriate acknowledgement is given to the permission granted to you for reuse by the copyright holder in each figure or table caption.
  • Figures must be saved separate to text.
  • Please do not embed figures in the manuscript file.
  • So it is permissible to romanise the names of well-known public and historical figures (such as former presidents Rhee Syngman and Park Chung Hee) and companies (such as Hyundai and Samsung) as they are commonly done, even though this means that they do not comply with the new system.

Funding statement

  • Add or confirm the author-written Funding statement; Articlo flags it if author input is still needed.
  • Please supply all details required by any funding and grant-awarding bodies as an Acknowledgement on the title page of the manuscript, in a separate paragraph, as follows: For multiple agency grants: "This work was supported by the [Funding Agency 1] under Grant [number xxxx]; [Funding Agency 2] under Grant [number xxxx]; and [Funding Agency 3] under Grant [number xxxx].".
Show 2 more
  • You should declare only the acquired funds and grants that are directly relevant to the work reported in your article; for example, This work was supported by the [Funding Agency #1] under Grant [number xxxx]; [Funding Agency #2] under Grant [number xxxx]; and [Funding Agency #3] under Grant [number xxxx].
  • Please supply all details required by any funding and grant-awarding bodies as an Acknowledgement on the title page of the manuscript, in a separate paragraph, as follows: For single agency grants: "This work was supported by the [Funding Agency] under Grant [number xxxx].".

  • Review: Wherever necessary, an older spelling should be followed by the current pinyin romanisation in parentheses on the first occurrence, e.g.
  • Review: All Asian Studies Review articles should use the pinyin system in transliterating Chinese terms and names – for example, Beijing (not Peking) and Guangzhou (not Canton) – with the exception of those names and terms that are still commonly rendered according to older romanisation systems, such as Sun Yatsen, Chiang Kaishek, etc.
  • In cases where the OED gives alternative spellings, the first spelling should be used Please note: following the OED we use British spellings, including: "-ise" and "-isation" (not "-ize" and "-ization"), "centre" (not "center"), "honour" (not "honor"), etc., but the original spelling of words within quoted passages should not be changed unless it is clear that there has been a typographical error.
