Reference style
- Articlo formats your supplied references to the journal's stored style and checks that citations match the reference list; source validity is not verified.
- Provide references and brief descriptions of methods that have been published.
Show 10 more
- Identify drugs and chemicals, including generic name, dosage and route(s) of administration; for all reagents include the company name and catalog number in parentheses in that order, but do not include the company location (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.4161/auto.5.4.8509); additional information such as concentration should be separate by a semi-colon, for example: “…detected with anti-Atg44 (AntibodyGlobal, A44; 1:20,000).” For reagents obtained from Addgene, also include the name of the depositing lab.

- The exceptions include lists of oligonucleotide primers, microRNAs, CRISPR-Cas-9-targeting sequences, and large datasets that can be presented in a supplemental table, which can be submitted as Excel files; information about plasmids, cell lines/strains, and antibodies/antisera can be included in a table, but must be part of the main paper.
- Each figure legend should start with a title.
- On the figures do not use parentheses or periods after panel letters.
- List of oligonucleotide primers." Additional explanatory text should be placed below the table.

- Review: One combined PDF or Word file of the supplemental methods, tables and figures should be submitted for review; a Word file must be submitted upon Conditional Acceptance for editing purposes.
- The puncta should not include data, but model figures are acceptable (if you choose to include a previously published figure it is incumbent upon the authors to obtain all necessary approval from the original publisher to reproduce the figure); if you wish to include unpublished data, please use an alternative format.
- Figures should be supplied in one of our preferred file formats: PS, JPEG, TIFF, or Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX) files are acceptable for figures that have been drawn in Word.

Article structure and word limits
- Use superscript for protein point mutants such as “ULK1 S757A ”; because this nomenclature denotes a mutant, do not use it for WT—use “WT ULK1” instead of “ULK1 WT ”.
- Note: Unless it is being used as the first word of a sentence, “western” should be lower case (PMC5240824).
Show 42 more
- Note that protein names for mouse and human should be in uppercase, as with “ATG5”.
- Thus, a slash should not be used when indicating interacting proteins or a complex as in “ULK1-ATG13”.
- Should be no more than 3000 words.
- Note that the definitions for genes/proteins should exactly match those in HGNC, MGI or the appropriate database, and that the journal style for the class III phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase is PtdIns3K and the product is PtdIns3P.
- It should be a maximum width of 525 pixels.
- Review: These instructions will ensure we have everything required so your paper can move through peer review, production and publication smoothly.
- Should you have any queries, please visit our Author Services website or contact us here.
- If you are submitting in PDF format, source files in high resolution format will be required prior to acceptance.

- We encourage authors to download this list and check each item carefully, as each criterion must be met before a paper will be accepted for publication.
- Use parentheses first, followed by square brackets, then curly brackets.
- Units of measure (except for % and °C) should have a space between the number and the unit.
- Use “h” for hours (do not use “hr” or “hrs”), “min” for minute(s) and “s” for second(s).
- Note, there should not be spaces on either side of a slash.
- Use “Macroautophagy/autophagy” the first time if “autophagy” is being used as a synonym for macroautophagy.
- Graphs, for example, should not have labels that are substantially smaller than other panels.

- Resource The Resource category is for papers that provide useful information for the community, but that may not be complete stories, or may not yet have mechanistic information.
- For example, “analyzed” versus “analysed” (note that “analyses” is correct for the noun, whereas “analyzes” should be used for the verb), “localization” not “localisation”, “while” rather than “whilst”, and “homolog” instead of “homologue”.
- Use capital letters for “WT”.
- Do not use the possessive form for diseases such as Parkinson, Huntington, Alzheimer, Crohn, etc. The people whose names are associated with these diseases generally did not have the disease (in contrast to, for example, Lou Gehrig's disease).
