Abstract length

  • Review: Authors whose manuscripts are accepted for publication must supply illustrations that are of professional quality and of a size suited to the dimensions of a Geographical Review page: no larger than 5 inches by approximately 7.7 inches, including the caption.
  • Figures should be saved separately from the text.
  • Illustrations—photographs, drawings, maps, graphs, and diagrams—and tables should depict important themes in the text.
  • A callout for each illustration and each table must be placed in the text.
  • Captions for illustrations should not be placed in or on the figures but should instead be double spaced on a separate sheet.
  • Include in the caption a brief description of the illustration and, if it is an adaptation or reproduction, its source.
  • Tables should present new information rather than duplicating what is in the text.
  • Each table must be on a separate page, with tabs between entries in a row.
  • Do not use table-formatting software or include tables formatted as spreadsheets.
  • Submit each figure as a separate TIFF or JPEG file.
  • Submit as text files (not preformatted as table).
  • It’s very important that you have been given permission to use any tables or figures you are reproducing from another source before you submit.
  • Submit as text, not in figure files.
  • Print Rates shall be set at $400 per figure for the first four figures; $75 per figure for five or more figures.
  • Check the instructions for authors to see how you should supply tables and figures, whether at the end of the text or in separate files, and follow any guidance given on the submission system.
  • Do not forget to leave room for captions beneath full-page illustrations.
  • Label each illustration with the name of the author(s) and the number but please do not mount or write directly on photographs.
  • Editorial: Black and white figures accompanying editorial text shall be reproduced without additional charge to the Society or authors.
  • The cost of color figures in the print Journal shall be charged to the authors at the then current rates of the Publisher.

Title page and author information

Article structure and word limits

  • It should also be no shorter than 5,000 words.
  • Please include page numbers if documenting a text (Smith 1989, 13—14).

  • Maps should contain no more than five colors or gray shades with no less than 20 percent difference between each shade.

  • Special characters If you are preparing your manuscript in Microsoft Word and your article contains special characters, accents, or diacritics, we recommend you follow these steps: European accents (Greek, Hebrew, or Cyrillic letters, or phonetic symbols): choose Times New Roman font from the dropdown menu in the “Insert symbol” window and insert the character you require.
  • Special characters If you are preparing your manuscript in Microsoft Word and your article contains special characters, accents, or diacritics, we recommend you follow these steps: Asian languages (such as Sanskrit, Korean, Chinese, or Japanese): choose Arial Unicode font from the dropdown menu in the “Insert symbol” window and insert the character you require.
  • If you are at the early stage of your research, you may also need to read how to start writing a journal manuscript.
  • Image descriptions are typically used by systems such as pronouncing screen readers to make images accessible to people that cannot read or see the object due to a visual disability.

  • Please use American spelling style consistently throughout your manuscript.
  • Please use double quotation marks, except where “a quotation is ‘within’ a quotation.” Please note that long quotations should be indented without quotation marks.
