Abstract length

  • Provide an author-written abstract of no more than 250 words.
  • Articles in Global Health Action must include an abstract of no more than 250 words.

  • Do not use acronyms in the title, abstract, sub-headings or Paper Context section unless the abbreviation is well known and commonly used in global health.
  • All manuscripts must include the essential elements needed to evaluate a manuscript: abstract, author affiliations, figures, tables, funder information, and references.
  • The abstract should provide sufficient information for readers to be able to decide whether or not to proceed to the full text.
  • The abstract should not include sentences cut and pasted from the manuscript and acronyms should be avoided if possible.
  • Trial registration numbers should be included in the abstract, with full details in the methods section.
  • Review / Letter: If the abstract or any other substantial part has been posted online (e.g., for open review, as part of conference proceedings, a report, or an unpublished paper) this must be explained in the cover letter.

Reference style

  • Articlo formats your supplied references to the journal's stored style and checks that citations match the reference list; source validity is not verified.
  • All bibliographic entries must contain a corresponding in-text citation.

  • Major deviations from the recommended word length or number of tables and figures, must be justified.

  • Clinical Trial: Confirm that: any patient, service user, or participant (or that person's parent or legal guardian) in any research, experiment, or clinical trial described in your paper has given written consent for the inclusion of material pertaining to themselves; they acknowledge that they cannot be identified via the paper, and you have fully anonymized all such individuals.

Blinded manuscript

Cover letter

  • Regardless of the file format in the original submission, an editable version of the article must be supplied during the revision stage.

  • All charts (bar, pie, column, etc.) should be two dimensional, unless three dimensions are required to present the data.
  • If the article is a PhD Synthesis, authors must also add a further paragraph under End Materials titled ‘Academic Details’.

  • The contributions of each author (using initials as appropriate) should be stated clearly and will be published in the article.

  • For all NIH or Wellcome-funded studies, the grant number(s) must be included.
  • However, if this is the case, authors MUST inform the Journal in their cover letters.
  • The registry should be publicly accessible (at no charge) open to all prospective registrants, and managed by a not-for-profit organization.
  • Include all relevant safety precautions; cite any accepted standard or code of practice.

  • Authors also need to comply with the American Psychological Association's (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct.
  • Yet many of these syntheses do not reach beyond the host institution or the immediate collaborators and examiners.
  • Global Health Action requires authors to prepare a statement to this effect.
  • Image descriptions are typically used by systems such as pronouncing screen readers to make images accessible to people that cannot read or see the object due to a visual disability.

Article type and manuscript length

  • Letter: The letter must state the manuscript title and article type and outline why the work is important and should be considered for publication in Global Health Action.
  • The title page should also include a separate word count of the abstract and manuscript (excluding references, tables and figures).

Language and text style

  • Acronyms: Acronyms, or short abbreviations, should only be used if the term is repeated more than three times throughout the manuscript.
  • Use a maximum of three levels of headings made clear by orthographic indicators, e.g., capitals, italics, bold, etc. Insert running page numbers in the footer.
