Readiness requirements

Review the key details below, or download the complete checklist with every stored source-backed requirement.

Abstract length

  • Provide an author-written abstract of no more than 200 words.
  • Use a unstructured abstract.
Show 3 more
  • Should contain an unstructured abstract of 200 words.
  • Trial registration numbers should be included in the abstract, with full details in the methods section.
  • There are no strict formatting requirements, but all manuscripts must contain the essential elements needed to evaluate a manuscript: abstract, author affiliation, figures, tables, funder information, and references.

Keywords

  • Do not include keywords.

Reference style

  • Articlo formats your supplied references in Harvard style and checks that citations match the reference list; source validity is not verified.
  • As Outis writes, Vermin—always the negative, the “inedible” in the vermin/livestock dichotomy—are taboo cuisine because their behavior in human domiciles, suggestive of licentious freedom and an amoral proclivity to revel in the unclean matter their cohabitants strive to keep secret, offends. (2006, 71) Authors One author Citations of a reference with one credited author include the author’s surname and the publication year. [Example] Two authors Citations of a reference with two credited authors include the surnames of both authors and the publication year.
Show 24 more
  • The surnames are separated by commas, with “and” appearing before the third author’s surname in both narrative citations and parenthetical citations. [Example] Four or more authors Citations of a reference with four or more credited authors include the surname of the first author, followed by “et al.” and the publication year. [Example] Organizational authors Citations of a reference with a credited organizational author feature an abbreviation of the organization’s name if the reference entry’s author listing includes the abbreviation. [Example] If the reference entry’s author listing spells out the organization’s name, citations should display the name in full and should not introduce an abbreviation. [Example] Warning | Not controlled when printed Maintained by the Head of Copyediting | Taylor & Francis Journals Page 5 of 48 No credited author Citations of a reference with no credited author display a short title in title case (headline capitalization), instead of an author name.
  • Citations: Bendazzi (2016, vol. 1) or (Bendazzi 2016, vol. 1) [without page] Bendazzi (2016, 1:119) or (Bendazzi 2016, 1:119) [with page] An Arabic digit should be used to designate the volume number in a reference entry and in citations.
  • Citation examples Bojinov, Choudhury, and Lane (2021) [narrative]; (Bojinov, Choudhury, and Lane 2021) [parenthetical] Warning | Not controlled when printed Maintained by the Head of Copyediting | Taylor & Francis Journals Page 45 of 48 Archival material models Titled document cited, with accession number and filing information *Each document should be registered as a unique reference entry if the text cites multiple documents from the same paper collection.
  • Citation examples Long (1935) [narrative]; (Long 1935) [parenthetical] Untitled document cited, with accession number *Each document should be registered as a unique reference entry if the text cites multiple documents from the same paper collection.
  • Citation examples Elgar (1917) [narrative]; (Elgar 1917) [parenthetical] Warning | Not controlled when printed Maintained by the Head of Copyediting | Taylor & Francis Journals Page 46 of 48 Titled document (book), with accession number and approximate (circa, “ca.” date range) *Each document should be registered as a unique reference entry if the text cites multiple documents from the same paper collection.
  • For manuscripts submitted in LaTeX format a.bib reference file must be included.
  • All bibliographic entries must contain a corresponding in-text citation.
  • Readers should be able to interpret the table without reference to the text.
  • If you reply yes, you will be required to provide the DOI, pre-registered DOI, hyperlink, or other persistent identifier associated with the data set(s).
  • Parenthetical citations should usually be placed at the end of a sentence, before the terminal punctuation (e.g., period).
  • Dashes should not replace names repeated in the author listings of successive reference entries.
  • Authors do not need to include DOIs for published journal articles when preparing manuscripts.
  • Citation examples *If the reference entry encompasses multiple volumes, in-text citations must indicate the specific volume cited.
  • The DAS should include the hyperlink, DOI or other persistent identifier associated with the data set(s), or information on how the data can be requested from the authors.
  • A declaration must be included within the submission stating: Confirmation the authors take full responsibility for the integrity of the whole content, including accuracy of references.
  • The surnames are separated by “and” in both narrative citations and parenthetical citations. [Example] Three authors Citations of a reference with three credited authors include the surnames of all authors and the publication year.
  • If the book or report was produced inside the United States or Canada, the location element features the city and the postal abbreviation of the state or province from which the publisher operates. [Example of location with city only], [Example of location with city and country], [Example of location with city and postal abbreviation] Author-supplied translated titles Under most circumstances, if a reference entry features a non-English title, an author should supply an English-language translation of the title.
  • In the reference entry for a journal article or a book chapter, an English translation should be provided only for a non-English article or chapter title, not for the journal or book title. [Example of translated title for journal article], [Example of translated title for book], [Example of translated title for book chapter] Journals that publish non-English content may not uphold this style convention.
  • When preparing a manuscript for a journal that publishes content written in a language other than English, an author should consult with the journal's editorial office about the preferred convention.

  • Warning | Not controlled when printed Maintained by the Head of Copyediting | Taylor & Francis Journals Page 12 of 48 URLs and DOIs URLs A uniform resource locator (URL) closes the reference entry for a webpage or other online resource.
  • In a parenthetical citation, the author surname(s) and the publication year appear together in parentheses.
  • For such journals, providing English-language translations for titles throughout the reference section may not be desirable.
  • The reference entry for an article that has published in a journal whose volumes are divided into issues features a volume number and an issue number, enclosed in parentheses, even if issues within the volume are continuously paginated.

Figure and table rules

  • Keep every figure and table numbered, captioned, and cited in the manuscript.

  • Figures should be of sufficient resolution to enable refereeing.
