Abstract length

  • Provide an author-written abstract of no more than 150 words.
  • PMM also requires an abstract of up to 150 words explaining the contribution the article makes to research; up to eight keywords; and a two- or three-line biography of each author which will run at the end of the article.

Reference style

  • Abstracts, impact statements and author details PMM requires postal and email addresses of authors; authors are requested to add their ORCID iD ( https://orcid.org ) at the end of their short biographies.

Article structure and word limits

  • New development articles (a maximum of 3500 words) focus on the evolution of contemporary public service policy, evolving relationships between elected and appointed officials, management or practice and convey the potential or actual impact of change in a detached, informed and authoritative way.
  • Research Article: Authors should also supply an ‘impact’ statement (for research articles and new developments) of up to 150 words that highlights the lessons in the article for international practice; please specify the level and specialities of practitioners the article is speaking to.

  • Authors need to read the copy-edited version very carefully and make any changes in red.
  • First or ‘corresponding’ authors receive proofs from the publisher for checking, which need to be returned promptly.
  • Image descriptions are typically used by systems such as pronouncing screen readers to make images accessible to people that cannot read or see the object due to a visual disability.

Article type and manuscript length

  • Research Article: Article types Research articles, which have a maximum of 8000 words, as well as no more than 40 references and no more than a total of 10 tables and figures, must meet high standards of intellectual argument, evidence and demonstrate a clear appreciation of practice in public management.
  • Authors should, of course, re-read the main text, but should not make changes except in the case of typos or as a result of a major event that affects the text (for example a change of government).

Language and text style

  • Authors should take into account the needs of both the practitioner and academic readership in drafting their contributions, explaining technical terms and avoiding exclusive jargon.

Manuscript structure

  • If results must be posted on a university website they need to be classified as confidential and therefore not accessible on the internet.
  • Authors must retain full records of the methods undertaken, including full descriptions and records of the prompts used, which must be shared with the journal upon request.
