Article type and manuscript length
- Preparing Your Paper Structure Your paper should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figures; figure captions (as a list).
Language and text style
- Quoted material over 40 words in length should be indented left and should not have quotation marks.
- British English spelling is required (s instead of z where applicable, e.g. secularisation, baptised, analyse).

- Always use single quotations marks, except for quotations within quotations, when you should use double quotation marks.
- If the quotation forms a complete sentence, the final full point must be inside the quotation mark.
- If it does not, the final full point must be outside the quotation mark.
- Quotations from works in English should be reproduced faithfully, even when they do not conform to RSS house style.
- French words which have entered the English language should neither be italicised, nor have accents: emigre, elite, regime.
- Please include all accents and diacritical signs as they appear in the original language (names of people, places and publications, and in quoted text).
- Proper names in non-Roman alphabets should be transliterated, not anglicised, unless English usage is established.
- Provide an English translation in brackets at first mention.
- Quotations from works in English should be reproduced faithfully, even when they contradict the above practices.
- Abbreviations consisting of initial letters of words do not have a full point between letters: USA, CIS, BBC.
