  • Do not submit two different sets of figure files.
  • Figure captions and the text of the article must not refer specifically to any color.
  • Tables should present new information rather than duplicating what is in the text.
  • Data For purposes of reproducibility and for benefit of readers and referees, American Statistician requires authors to provide well-documented code that duplicates at least one table or figure of prominent empirical results from the paper.
  • Figures should be supplied in one of our preferred file formats: PS, JPEG, TIFF, or Microsoft Word (DOC or DOCX) files are acceptable for figures that have been drawn in Word.

Funding statement

  • You should declare only the acquired funds and grants that are directly relevant to the work reported in your article; for example, This work was supported by the [Funding Agency #1] under Grant [number xxxx]; [Funding Agency #2] under Grant [number xxxx]; and [Funding Agency #3] under Grant [number xxxx].

Competing interests

  • Include or confirm the competing interests required by the journal. Articlo checks this item and flags anything that still needs author input.

Ethics statement

  • Include or confirm the ethics statement required by the journal. Articlo checks this item and flags anything that still needs author input.

Cover letter

  • Using Third-Party Material in your Paper You must obtain the necessary permission to reuse third-party material in your article.
  • Review: The use of short extracts of text and some other types of material is usually permitted, on a limited basis, for the purposes of criticism and review without securing formal permission.
Show 1 more
  • If you wish to include any material in your paper for which you do not hold copyright, and which is not covered by this informal agreement, you will need to obtain written permission from the copyright owner prior to submission.

Author contributions

  • Submitting authors should be prepared to submit CRediT roles for themselves and their co-authors (where applicable) as part of the submission process.

Supplementary files

  • Include every cited supplementary file and use matching labels in the manuscript.
  • The Authors need to use their best judgment in deciding what should be included in the manuscript and what should be in the supplementary material.

Title page and author information

  • All authors of a manuscript should include their full name and affiliation on the cover page of the manuscript.
  • One author will need to be identified as the corresponding author, with their email address normally displayed in the article PDF (depending on the journal) and the online article.

Article structure and word limits

  • They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
  • Review: These instructions will ensure we have everything required so your paper can move through peer review, production and publication smoothly.

  • Articles should be clearly written, address topics that are important for a broad group of statisticians, and ordinarily not be highly technical.
  • Your research funder or your institution may require you to publish your article open access.
  • Use our APC finder to view the APC for this journal.
  • Software developers who wish to have their products reviewed should contact: Robert A.
  • For example, do not write "the blue line shows." Instead, use "the dashed line shows." or an equivalent.
  • Whenever a dataset is used, its source should be fully documented and the data should be made available as on online supplement.
  • Necessary comments or instructions on how to execute the computer programs should be provided.
  • The conference paper must be properly cited in the journal version.

  • Editorial: General: The following list illustrates examples of topics for articles in this section: The editorial board particularly desires to attract expository articles written for a general statistical audience on topics of current importance in areas including, but not limited to, the preceding list.

Preprints and prior publication

  • If you have shared an earlier version of your Author’s Original Manuscript on a preprint server, please be aware that anonymity cannot be guaranteed.

Article type and manuscript length

  • Preparing Your Paper Structure Your paper should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) and figure(s) and their captions placed within the text.

  • Authors may choose which coding language and which empirical results to reproduce, and they should ensure the code runs in reasonable time by choosing a subset of results to reproduce, if the code is computationally intensive.

Manuscript structure

  • Book publishers and developers of other items who wish to have their products reviewed in this section should contact the editor.
  • Papers in this section should: bring more domain-specific application knowledge to statisticians.
Show 5 more
  • When a footnote is absolutely necessary, please keep it brief and do not include mathematical expressions.
  • Whenever specific code has been used to implement or illustrate the results of a paper, that code should be made available if possible.
  • Articles reporting results based on computation should provide enough information so that readers can evaluate the quality of the results.
  • The range includes: An article for this section should state clearly the type of course in which the material is useful and it is desirable to discuss student reactions to the ideas presented.
  • Authors must retain full records of the methods undertaken, including full descriptions and records of the prompts used, which must be shared with the journal upon request.
